What Is Mouth (Oral) Cancer?
Oral cancer is a type of head and neck cancer that develops in the tissues of the mouth. It often begins in the surface lining cells and can spread if not identified early. Common areas affected include the lips, tongue, gums, inner cheeks, and the floor or roof of the mouth.
Symptoms That Should Be Evaluated
Symptoms may include:
- A mouth sore that does not heal
- Red or white patches inside the mouth
- A lump, thickened area, or mass in the mouth or jaw
- Pain or numbness of the lips or mouth
- Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the tongue
- Persistent mouth or jaw pain
- Unexplained bleeding in the mouth
- Voice changes or slurred speech
Any symptom lasting longer than two weeks should be evaluated.
Risk Factors
